Great and Little Abaco Islands and nearby cays form the northernmost group of the Bahama Islands. The candy-striped lighthouse on Elbow Cay has been a landfall for Bahamas-bound ships since the days when loyalists from New England and New York arrived in Abaco in 1783. Tidy, New England style settlements abound in these cays noted for fishing, farming, lumbering and boat building. Man of War Cay is the center for the Bahamian ship building industry which produces some of the best hand-crafted boats in the world. Walker’s Cay in the Abacos, northernmost of the inhabitated Bahamas, is a missile tracking station for Cape Canaveral.
