Bahamas Philately: Abaco Islands – Treasure Cay

Treasure Cay, is a parcel of land connected to Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Historically, it was known Sand Banks Cay.

The settlement of Carleton Point, named after Sir Guy Carleton, was founded in 1783 on the northern end of Sand Banks Cay by about 600 Loyalists fleeing the post-Revolutionary United States. A hurricane hit in 1785, and the settlement was later deserted.

In 1968, the area was developed as part of a $16m real estate development plan by Deltec Banking Corporation. The development included the Treasure Cay Beach Hotel and Villas, the Treasure Cay Tennis Club, the Treasure Cay Golf and Country Club with an 18-hole Dick Wilson championship course, and the Treasure Cay International Airport.
