Even before America’s first astronaut came to Grand Bahama for debriefing in 1961, the Island was making news as an industrial center. Freeport, a planned industrial-residential community embracing 234 square miles of the Island, is being developed by international banking firms. With special tax concessions, Freeport is swiftly erecting supermarkets, schools, a hospital, churches, and a huge off-shore bunkering terminal for fueling deep-draft vessels. While it is the most industrialized of all the Islands, Grand Bahama is not without its resort appeal. Located only 60 miles from Palm Beach, it is a popular spot for American business conventions. The largest hotel in the Bahamas (350 rooms) provides ample facilities for leisurely diversion for visitors who like to mix business with pleasure.
