Bahamas Philately: 1973 Independence – 3c Clarence A Bain ‘National Hero’

Clarence A. Bain was born 16 July 1904 in Love Hill, Andros, Bahama Islands. He was a politician, member of parliament, cabinet minister and civil rights activist.

Bain received his early education at Calabash Bay Public School. He then moved to the United States where he lived for the next thirty six years. While in the US, he experienced racial segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.

After returning to the Bahamas in 1954, he became involved in the civil rights struggle. Two years later he ran in the general election as a member of the Progressive Liberal Party and won the Andros and Berry Islands constituency seat. He represented the area from 1956 to 1971.

As a member of the PLP he coined one of the most famous political quotes: ”If you can’t fish, cut bait; if you can’t cut bait, get the hell out of the boat,” used by Lynden Pindling at a PLP convention.

Bain died on 14th July 1971 at the age of 66.
