This beautiful bee-eater is easily distinguished by its colour. It gathers in large flocks to breed in colonies in river banks. During the day the birds from the colony disperse over a wide area to feed, and they may be seen hawking insects from a perch near the top of a tree. This species makes less use of the power-lines than other bee-eaters. It is found throughout Rhodesia in summer and migrates to the Congo and Tanzania during the winter.
