In the early 1960s, the hotel director of the Grand Bahama Hotel and Country Club, Charles Sammons, requested the construction of two Chinese junks, at a cost of USD$15,000 each, for junkets between Grand Bahama and Sandy Cay. The junks, named Wing Wong and Hi Lee, sailed under Captain Jim Sword.
Constructed in Hong Kong, the junks were made of mahogany and teak with three bright red Dacron sails. Each junk was 40ft long and equipped with a 60-horsepower Ford deisel engine and could achieve 10 knots, while under power, 8 knots.
