Netball is Australia’s most popular women’s sport. Originally known as women’s basketball, it was renamed in 1970 when the All Australian Netball Association was formed. Played indoors or outdoors, on hard or grass surfaces, netball differs from basketball in several ways, including a prohibition on dribbling and running with the ball. Each team has seven players whose movements are restricted to certain areas of the court.
Austalia has won five of the seven international tournaments so far conducted, including the first in 1963.
