Australia Philately: 2018 Convict Past – $3 Swan River Colony

Swan River Colony was set up as a free-settler colony in 1829, but 20 years later local authorities asked Britain to sanction penal transportation, believing convict labour was needed to develop the colony.

The Convict Establishment, shown in the stamp, was designed by Lieutenant Henry Wray and Captain Edmund Henderson, and built using convict labour.
