Known as Van Diemen’s Land until 1856, Tasmania was the place of incarceration for around 75,000 convicts until transportation was abolished there in 1853. Port Arthur, shown in the stamp with convict labourers, was originally designed as a timber station, but rapidly became significant to the convict system. It was a penal settlement for men from 1830 to 1877. The design also shows a graphic iteration of a convict love token.
