The American War of Independence left Britain with no place to transport convicts. Soon the British penal system was in chaos – and the solution was settlement in Australia. So it can be said that the Americans’ fight for independence was a major factor in the foundation of the Australian nation.
Friendship between Australia and the United States of America is exhibited on a 37c stamp to be issued by Australia Post on Australia Day, 26 January 1987. The stamp shows the United States and Australia (as “mates” and “buddies”), personified by the American eagle and koala with arms around each other. On the same day, in America, a stamp with a similar design will be released by the US Post Office.
