Hamilton Hume was born on 19 June 1797, near Parramatta, New South Wale. He undertook many journeys of exploration, the most significant of which was the trip with Captain W H Hovell to Port Phillip and back in 1824-25. He settled in the Yass district in the late 1830s with his wife Elizabeth. In 1860 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. He died at his home, Cooma Cottage, Yass (now a National Trust property) on 19 April 1873. Hume was the first Australian born explorer. His intimate knowledge of the bush and of Aboriginal customes and languages were key elements in his success.
