Four Australian sites have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List solely on the basis of their cultural significance. The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens in Melbourne, Victoria, was constructed to host the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. It is the oldest building in the world from the Great Exhibition era still operating as an exhibition hall. The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape on the traditional country of the Gunditjmara people, in Victoria’s Western District. The site includes one the world’s most extensive and ancient aquaculture systems, constructed at least 6,600 years ago to trap and harvest kooyang or Short-finned Eels. Australia’s most famous building, the Sydney Opera House in New South Wales, was formally opened by the Queen in 1973. This great modernist masterpiece was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon.
