The Melbourne Philatelic Sales Centre, Elizabeth Street, was opened on 10 June 1974. It was anticipated to be opened earlier but the Post Office experienced difficulties in finding a suitable accommodation.
Philatelic sales centres allowed collectors to purchase philatelic items over the counter rather than by mail. As well as Australian items, the sales centres sold items for Australian Antarctic Territory, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, Fiji, Nauru, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea and Western Samoa:
-
- Australia – stamps, first day covers, souvenir stamp packs, postal stationery and philatelic handbooks.
- Australian Antarctic Territory and Cocos (Keeling) Islands – stamps and souvenir stamp packs.
- Christmas Island, Fiji, Nauru, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea and Western Samoa – stamps, postal stationery and souvenir packs.
On 10 December 1979 it moved to Melbourne G.P.O. on Bourke Street. The move was temporary.
