The Brisbane General Post Office (GPO) is located at 261 Queen Street. Originally constructed in 1872, it was extended through to Elizabeth Street in 1908.

A Philatelic Section was opened in May 1953. The section provided counter service for philatelists and handled mail orders from within Queensland.

A First Day of Issue postmarker was introduced on 5 November 1958.

A new Philatelic Sales Centre was opened in the south wing of the Brisbane G.P.O. on 2 August 1976. An 1890 pillar box near the main entrance was available for the posting of philatelic mail.
