The Hobart General Post Office (G.P.O.) is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Macquarie Street. The building was constructed between 1901 and 1905.
1953
A Philatelic Section was opened on 1 March 1953 on the 1st floor of the Hobart G.P.O. The section provided counter service for philatelists and handled mail orders within Tasmania. It was opened between 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

A First Day of Issue postmarker was introduced on 5 November 1958.
