Bahamas Philately: 1954 Definitive Series – 5d Modern Dairying

In 1936 an American investor named Austin Levy set up a dairy and poultry farm on thousands of acres at Hatchet Bay on Eleuthera. By 1956, about 100 head of the 350 head herd of Holstein and Guernsey cattle were being milked producing about 180-190 galleons of milk per day supplying milk and ice cream to the tourist markets in Nassau.

The plantation provided much of the infrastructure and prosperity for nearby Alice Town, including a general store, a yacht club and a power plant.
