Especially favoured by yachtsmen, the Exumas are like a 90-mile long necklace of coral beginning about 25 miles south-east of Nassau and curving southward in a gentle arc. The festive Out Island Regatta – the sailing championship for native craft – takes place each spring at George Town, a harbor which an 18th century geographer said “could easily accommodate the entire British Navy.” So beautiful are the Exumas that a major section has been developed by the Bahamas Government and private enterprise as one of the world’s first undersea parks. Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, of Broadway and TV fame, are among noted Americans who have developed private island hideaways in the Exumas.
