Downtown Freeport began as a supermarket and a few single-storey commercial buildings. After the creation of planning department, a downtown square with a parade ground was created. It was landscaped with an avenue of trees that lead to a large bronze head portrait of Sir Winston Churchill.
The bronze was created by Marshall Fredericks. The inscription read:
“If we pick a quarrel between the past and the present, We shall find that we have lost the future.”
