Malawi Philately: 1965 – New Coinage

The first coinage of the Independent State of Malawi were issued in 1965. The coins were made in nickel-silver alloy by the Royal Mint, London, and carried a portrait on the obverse of the Prime Minister, Dr. Hastings Banda, modelled by Mr. Paul Vincze.

The four values issued were:

    • Sixpence: An Austrolop Cock
    • Shilling: A bunch of maize cobs
    • Florin: Elephants
    • Half-Crown: The Malawi Coat of Arms
