Bahamas Philately: Gregory Arch

This stone arch was named after Governor John Gregory (1849-1854), who served around 1850, and it was opened to the public on January 19, 1852. The arch, at the intersection of Market and Duke Streets, divides downtown Nassau from the rest of the island and is a street overpass to Government House east entrance gate. The small tunnel forms a picturesque entrance to the community known as Over The Hill and the old settlements of Grants Town and Bain Town.

The Gregory Arch quarry pit was the source of ‘cut’ limestone boulders used in the construction of many buildings in downtown Nassau.
