Bahamas Philately: Treasure Cay Inn

Treasure Cay Inn was a small inn located on five mile beach on Treasure Cay on Great Abaco Island. It provided 36 air-conditioned rooms with twin king-sized double beds and also provided a marina.

Construction of the hotel and marina began in 1959 at a cost of $2,500,000 and was original named the Treasure Cay Club Hotel. The hotel formed part of the 1,500 acre residential-resort development of Treasure Cay. The development also include construction of an 18-hole championship golf course.

By early December 1961 the hotel was almost complete with a 1 January opening date. However, just after midnight on 19 December,  a fire totally destroyed the hotel. A second hotel on the same site was started in 1962. When the hotel finally opened in 1963, it became part of Leonard Thompson’s Holiday Inn chain of hotels

By 1964 the hotel was being advertised as Treasure Cay Inn and Marina. By 1965, the first nine holes of the golf course were completed. By 1966, it was being referred to as Treasure Cay Inn and Golf Club even though the remaining nine holes were completed in 1968.

In 1969 it was re-branded as Treasure Cay Yacht and Golf Club.
