This short by the British Library’s Philatelic Collections online lecture discusses the way national anthems are incorporated and depicted in stamp designs to help construct an underlying, non-extremist & endemic type of identity which the Sociologist Michael Billig terms ‘Banal Nationalism.’ In doing so stamps are highlighted to be an important research resource for cultural historians, manuscript specialists, print specialists and musicologists.
