Philippine Islands (U.S. Occupation)

After the defeat of the First Philippine Republic, the Philippines archipelago was administered under an American Insular Government. The Americans then suppressed other rebellious proto-states: mainly, the waning Sultanate of Sulu, as well as the insurgent Tagalog Republic. Under American rule, control was established over interior mountainous areas that had resisted Spanish conquest and cultural shifts began to occur alongside the development of a national consciousness.

In 1935, the Commonwealth of the Philippines was granted with Manuel Quezon as president and Sergio Osmeña as vice president. Quezon designated a national language and introduced women’s suffrage and land reform.
