StampCat Stamps: Remembrance Day – John McCrae In Flanders Fields

A pause for remembrance: this 1968 Canada Stamp shows John McCrae, soldier, physician, and poet, who wrote the infamous ‘In Flanders Fields’ during his service in World War 1. He describes the conflicting scene of thriving red poppies growing over the fresh graves of soldiers on the front. Now each year we wear a poppy in remembrance of all those who have served. CatStamp Stamps was surprised to see a little stamp first day cover picture on the wall of the museum! The cover shows “The Poppy Lady” Moina Michael, who, after being inspired by McCrae’s poem, popularized displaying physical poppies as a symbol for remembrance and as sales to raise funds for veterans.
