Zambia Philately: 1966 University Issue

The University of Zambia (UNZA) is a public university located in Lusaka, Zambia. It is Zambia’s largest and oldest learning institution. The university was established in 1965 and officially opened to the public on 12 July 1966.

A Provisional Council of the University of Zambia was put in place after enactment of the University of Zambia Act, 1965. In July 1965, Douglas G. Anglin was appointed Vice Chancellor and, in October 1965, President Kenneth David Kaunda gave the assent of Act no 66 of the 1965 act. The University of Zambia was inaugurated on 13 July 1966 following the appointment of President Kenneth David Kaunda as the first Chancellor on 12 July 1966.

The university was established by Act of Parliament No. 66 of 1965. The first intake of students took place on 17th March 1966. The motto of the University is Service and Excellence and has guided the development of the University since its inception.

The university building was designed by Julian Elliot and planned as a linear complex of linked buildings allowing for future growth. When it was produced, was in the forefront of thinking about new universities.

The image depicted in the stamp release shows the full planned university building, but this was never realised.

    • Complete sheets of each value, both numbered 001 (3d – 1B x 2; 1/3d 1A x 2)
    • A set of imperforate proofs individually mounted on presentation cards
    • An Official First Day Cover postmarked Ndola Stamp Bureau
