Zambia Philately: 1967 Lusaka International Airport

A set of two values, 6d. and 2s. 6d., marking the opening of the Lusaka International Airport, will be released mid-May. The airport Terminal Building is the main theme common to both stamps and is depicted against a purple background on the 6d. value and a brown background on the 2s. 6d. value, above a gold base strip.

First Day Covers (Official)

A distinctive first day cover for the issue was available at 5s. 0d. per cover. This included service and registration fees and airmail postage. All first day covers purchased through the Stamp Bureau, Ndola, bears the cancellation date-stamp impression of the post office established at the new airport.

The Zambia National Archives contained a copy of the following:

    • Complete sheets of each value, both from cylinders 1B x 2
    • A set of imperforate proofs individually mounted on presentation cards
    • An Official First Day Cover postmarked Lusaka Airport.
