Zambia Philately: 1969 International Year For African Tourism – 5n Map of Africa

In the 1960’s, tourism was a growing industry in Zambia, especially with the recent construction of the Kariba Dam and Lake Kariba, offering a range of water sports, fishing activities and luxury hotels. Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya) tourism had already been established during the 19th Century.

Zambia was home to Kafue National Park, one of the largest in Africa and home to hundreds of birds and mammal species, while Africa’s first walking safari was pioneered in South Luangwa National Park.

The Zambia National Tourism Bureau was established in May, 1965 to market tourist attractions such as waterfalls, game parks and cultural ceremonies. One of the successful campaigns of the Bureau was the Zambia in the Sun campaign.
