The General Post of Zambia announces the forthcoming issue of a special postage stamp to commemorate World Meteorological Day 1970. The date of issue will be 23rd March, 1970, the day designated by the World Meteorological Association. The 15 ngwee stamp shows weather satellite Nimbus III in position over the earth’s surface, on which can be seen the outline of the continent of Africa. This satellite was successfully launched on 14th April, 1969, by the United States of America and among the equipment carried is an infra-red spectrometer with which it is possible to measure temperature at different levels in the earth’s atmosphere.
The Department of Meteorology is in course installing equipment to enable it to receive information directly from orbiting satellites. This will assist greatly in the forecasting of Zambia’s weather.

First Day Covers (Official)
A specially designed First Day Cover was available at all Post Offices at 10n each. In addition the Stamp Bureau made up First Day Covers, bearing the stamp, at a cost of 30n each, which included the envelope, stamp and service charge.
