The General Post Office announces the forthcoming issue of a special postage stamp to commemorate the Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Nations to be opened at Lusaka on 8th September, 1970. The value is 15 ngwee and stamp will be placed on sale on 8th September, 1970.
Up to 60 Nations are expected to be represented and it will be the first occasion for the specially built conference building – known as Mulungushi Hall – to be used for an international meeting. The various conference rooms of Mulungushi Hall will be decorated with murals by Mrs G. E. Ellison, and the design of the 15 ngwee stamp is an adaption of one of these murals composed of African masks. An interesting feature of this mural is that the colours blue and green are obtained by the setting in of azurite and malachite chippings to indicate Zambia’s chief export of copper.
