Zambia Philately: 1972 Conservation Year (1st Issue)

In 1972, the UNESCO World Heritage Convention (16 November 1972) linked together, in a single document, the concepts of nature conservation and the preservation of cultural properties. The Convention recognised the way in which people interacted with nature, and the fundamental need to preserve the balance between the two, and defined the kind of natural or cultural sites which can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List.

In Zambia’s pre-independence times, there was a strong emphasis on soil conservation; wildlife protection and game control were practised.
