Zambia Philately: Luangwa Valley National Park

On 27 May 1938, three reserves were established in the valley of the Luangwa River: North Luangwa Game Reserve, Lukusuzi Game Reserve and South Luangwa Reserve.

In 1960, Norman Carr, a former elephant control officer of the Game and Tsetse Department of Northern Rhodesia, created the Luangwa Valley National Park. The National Park consisted of the Luangwa North Game Reserve and Luangwa South Game Reserve.

During the early 1970s, new legislation turned most of the game reserves into national parks. On 15 February 1972 the South Luangwa National Park and North Luangwa National Park were proclaimed.
