Bahamas Philately: Tamboo Club

The Tamboo Club was located at Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands. Tamboo is said to have been the name of a small boat owned by some Florida fishermen, who owned a small house overlooking the marina. When Great Harbour Cay was developed by Lou Chesler, their house was enlarged and turned into a restaurant.

On 31 December 1971, the name was given to a new building, established as a private dining club to attract celebrities. Business took a turn when most of the founding members didn’t even frequent the venue and as a result, there weren’t enough guests to supplement the high operating costs. By 1976, things went downhill and management began to subsidize the business, with the clubhouse closing.
