Bahamas Philately: Berry Islands – Great Harbour Cay

Great Harbour Cay underwent a period in intense and successful development in the late 1960s by Louis A Chelser, a Canadian entrepreneur who brought gambling to Freeport but was later forced out of the same town. The island attracted famous persons such as Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks, Brigitte Bardot and the Rat Pack.

At the centre of the development was a $2 million clubhouse, flanked on one side by a 18 hole gold course, and on the other side by an $8 million marina. It also included a hard-surfaced airstrip. However, by the late 1970s development had slowed and eventually stopped.
