Pelicans are widely distributed throughout Australia’s lakes, swamps and beaches. They are often seen swimming together in formation, which is thought to be a device to drive fish into shallow water. The pelican a living pre-historic relic. Fossil remains of pelicans which in Australia 30 to 40 million years ago have been found.
