The NSW Colony stamp shows Hyde Park Barracks, the first government-built convict barracks. Designed by former convict Francis Greenway, it opened in 1819 and was the principal depot for male convicts in NSW until 1848; transportation to NSW was abolished two years later. The design also shows a ticket of leave – earned for good behaviour – and a lithograph of a government jail gang.
