Bahamia was a suburban complex located south of Freeport, Grand Bahamas. It was owned by the Yorkshire Development Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of National Bulk Carriers of New York, and developed by Princess Realty Ltd, Freeport – a subsidiary of Princess Properties International Ltd.
The idea originated in 1962 when D K Ludwig and the Port Authority proposed to develop a 1,000 acre tract of land for residential and hotel use around a 18-hole championship gold course. Bahamia was envisioned as an exclusive residential estate.
The initial release of the development included the opening of the King’s Inn Hotel in 1965, along with the Bahamia Beach Club and Marina, and Bahamia Golf Club. Later, the International Hotel was added to the complex.
The complex consisted of:
-
- Bahamia North – 370 acres including a 18-hole championship golf course, and was located next to El Casino and the International Bazaar. This area consisted of multi-family dwellings.
- Bahamia South and West – single family dwellings.
- Bahamia Marina – 240 acres of property zoned for single and multi-family and commercial high-rise property located on and around canals. It ran from Bahamia South to the south of the ocean.
