Only 50 miles from Florida, the Biminis and their neighbour, Cat Cay, are internationally known for big-game fishing. Famed for its hotels, docks, and marinas catering to anglers, Bimini is responsible for the majority of the 50 certified world catches made in the Bahamas. Marling, sailfish, kingfish, and Bluefin tuna head the list of deep sea fighters lurking in Bimini waters. According to Indian legend, Ponce de Leon actually was seeking Bimini as the site of the “Fountain of Youth,” but missed and found Florida instead. During the era of prohibition, Bimini’s harbours ranked second only to Nassau as a lair for rum runners.
