Bahamas Philately: Eleuthera – Governor’s Harbour

In 1647, Captain William Sayle and the Eleutheria Adventurers (a group of Puritans), left Bermuda to seek relief from persecution by the Church of England. The group became ship-wrecked on the reefs of the northern end of the Arawak island of Cigatoo (Eleuthera) near the area now known as Preachers Cave.

By 1648, Sayles’ followers made it around the island to a quiet harbour and established the first new world republic on Cupids Cay named Colebrooke Town. The name was later changed to Governor’s Harbour because the first seat of government was established there.
