In the mid-1600’s, Eleuthera, from the Greek word for freedom, established its niche in democracy’s hall of fame as the site of the first republic in the New World. A slender, banana-shaped island over 100 miles long, it is probably the ranking resort center of the Out Islands with its many luxurious hotels and distinguished clubs. The most fertile of the Islands, Eleuthera is famous for dairy products and the sweetest pineapples in the world. At Rock Sound, the U.S. Government has a 15,000-acre agricultural development that includes a self-contained community. In the early days, Rock Sound was famous foe the wreckers who lured ships ashore with false lights, thus gaining the nickname of “Wreck Sound.”
